Sports briefs: Redwood softball bounces back from its first loss (2024)

The Redwood High softball team bounced back from its first loss of the season to beat Casa Grande 8-3 on Friday. The Giants (14-1) led 2-0 before erupting for five runs in the fifth to pull away from the Gauchos.

Morgan Bello and Mia Allen each drove in a pair of runs while Sadie Leonard and Maddie Sofnas each doubled and drove in a run.

Leonard also got the win in the circle, striking out seven and allowing one hit and a walk in four innings.

Prep baseball

Tam completed the three-game sweep of Redwood on Friday, beating the Giants 7-4 to improve to 17-1 on the season. The Hawks led 3-0 after one before the Giants took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth, where Tam evened the score.

The hosts went on to score two more runs in the fifth and then added another in the sixth. Tyler Buxton and Tommy Flynn combined for a perfect final three innings with two strikeouts to close the door.

Jake Moore had a game-high three RBIs for the Hawks while Charlie Boyle hit a solo home run and Alex Dargan collected two hits and drove in a run.

Luca Bove doubled twice and drove in a pair and Ben Cohen also had two RBIs for the Giants (13-5).

  • Alex Jigalin hit a two-out single with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth to send Archie Williams home with a 1-0 win over Novato on Friday. Archie Williams starter Elliot Joslin allowed just two hits with two strikeouts in six innings and Jonas Salk closed it out with a strikeout in the seventh. The Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Jake Tirk was thrown out at home on a ground ball before Salk forced a fly out to end it. Tirk went the distance with eight strikeouts and five hits allowed in defeat for Novato.
  • San Marin scored two runs in the top of the sixth to rally for a 4-3 win over Marin Catholic on Friday. Josh Martin doubled twice and drove in a run while Peter Nebb also had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Nebb also went the distance for the Mustangs, striking out three and allowing nine hits. Kody Perry, Matt Mitchell and Van Larson each drove in a run for the Wildcats.
  • Zach Coleman struck out nine and allowed four hits in a complete-game effort to lead Terra Linda to a 6-2 win over San Rafael on Friday. Coleman also went 2 for 3 at the plate while Zach Cauz and Josh Dedmon each drove in a pair to pace the Trojans.

Prep football

A week after being honored by the CIF, Marin Catholic head football coach Mazi Moayed took home another piece of hardware on Thursday. Cal-Hi Sports named Moayed the Medium Schools Coach of the Year after he led the Wildcats to their sixth consecutive undefeated MCAL season.

The Wildcats went 5-0 in the abbreviated spring season, bringing Moayed’s record at MC to 123-21 since taking the helm in 2010.

Boys soccer

Luka Vujicic scored a goal to help lift San Domenico to a 1-1 draw against Urban on Thursday.

Girls volleyball

Kayli Morris piled up 23 assists, six digs, five aces and two blocks to guide Tam to a 25-16, 25-10, 25-10 win against Novato on Friday. Caitlin Smith had 12 kills, six aces, six digs and two blocks for the Red-tailed Hawks.

  • Ella Green had 21 kills, 11 digs and four aces as Redwood swept past San Rafael 25-7, 25-9, 25-8 on Friday night. Ryan Bludau had 10 kills and nine digs for the Giants and Leia Minter had 42 assists and four digs. Mary Healy had six digs and four kills for the Bulldogs and Izzy Sonnet had four blocks and a kill.
  • Drew Stimson and Kate Lane combined for 14 kills as Marin Academy swept past Convent, 25-17, 25-22, 25-13 on Thursday. Elle Biehle had eight digs, three aces and three kills for MA while Amanda Johnson posted 23 digs.

College baseball

Starting pitcher Zach Tonnere allowed just two hits in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday but Santa Rosa turned that into three runs en route to a sweep, winning 3-1 and 6-2, respectively.

Anthony Pomilia and Eric Woodrow had one hit apiece in the first game for COM (5-11, 4-8 Bay Valley Conference). The Mariners — led by Woodrow’s two hits — managed eight hits in the second game. Santa Rosa starter Tyler Stasiowski held the Mariners to two runs and struck out 10 batters.

Boys basketball

AJ Rohosy scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Marin Catholic to an 80-53 win over San Rafael on Thursday. Kyle Winters added 14 and Lucq Anderson chipped in six points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Wildcats. Nate Bender led the Bulldogs with 13 points.

Boys lacrosse

Tam took down visiting Redwood on Thursday, 8-2, behind two-goal performances from Simon Montenecourt and Sebastian Chen. Tam goalie Wesley King put up a stellar performance in front of the net. Colin McGrath and Nolan Ewing scored goals for the Giants.

Boys golf

Sean Madden took home medalist honors for Terra Linda as the Trojans defeated Marin Catholic 203-229 at StoneTree on Thursday. Derek Newhall shot a 37 for the Trojans, which defeated MC in boys golf for the first time since the 1970s, according to TL coach Steve Troya. MC was led by Truman Ashford and Mason Sylvester, who both shot 43s.

Ace

  • Mark Jackson of Sleepy Hollow hit a hole-in-one at Meadow Club on September 16, 2020, on hole No. 14 from 200 yards out with a 3-Wood.
